Pinoy Youtube Sensations

Meet the country’s finest online stars

Story Mark Sablan

Nowadays, becoming famous is so easy. Just videotape yourself (using a digital camera or even just your cameraphone) and post the clip on YouTube. Wait for some time and voila, you have comments, subscribers, fans—even requests for interviews and features if you’re that good or controversial.

Just look at the following everyday Pinoy music-lovers who after a couple of video uploads zoomed to online superstardom—and even beyond.

Moymoy Palaboy

A comic duo composed of brothers James Ronald (Moymoy) and Rodfill, these two are known for their YouTube videos where they lip snych popular songs. So good are they when it comes to lip synching—with corresponding hilarious facial expressions, of course—that it didn’t take long before more and more people were checking out their YouTube profiles for even more videos. In 2008, their showbiz career got a kickstart when they appeared on GMA 7’s gag show Bubble Gang. They became a regular on the show, spoofing a new song every week. Other guest appearances on other shows followed, and even a couple of endorsements.

Lady Gagita and Haronce

The whole world was amazed when Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s music video for Telephone was released. With its fabulous costume changes, crazy choreography and controversies (guests at a diner were murdered in one scene), the video proved to be a must-watch. Out of nowhere, a fantastic video parody surfaced, which possibly is better than the original—and two Pinoys from Davao’s Mayaman University are behind it. The remarkable thing about the parody is that because of a low budget, the team behind it had no choice but to be resourceful, so they used an electric fan as a steering wheel, a curtain as a dress, and kamias as French fries! And the result is hilarious! The performances of the two gay impersonators are also very commendable. Not only did they memorize the dance steps, they even look like the pop stars they are trying to copy. So famous is the video that the two were featured on several GMA 7 shows such as Party Pilipinas, 24 Oras, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, Startalk and Showbiz Central, and were even shot by popular photographer Niccolo Cosme.
